Participating in athletics enriches the university experience by building character, discipline, tenacity, teamwork and leadership-qualities needed to succeed academically, professionally and personally. More than 700 student- athletes practice 20 to 25 hours per week, carry a full course load and must maintain the high academic standards expected of all University of Guelph students. Student-athletes often face challenges as they strive to excel in sports and school while managing educational costs.  Since the demands on their time make it difficult to hold part-time work, scholarships help them achieve their dreams of excellence in all aspects of the university experience.

 

Donors may wish to support an existing scholarship or established their own named award.  To support an existing scholarship, donors are encouraged to visit Team pages to view current scholarship giving opportunities.

 

To establish a new, named award, donors may wish to choose one of two options: Endowed Athletics Scholarship or Annual Expendable Scholarship.

 

Endowed Scholarships

Endowed scholarships provide annual funds from the invested income.  Minimum scholarships of $1,000 annually, require a gift of at least $30,000 while the maximum value of an athletics scholarship of $4,500 requires a gift of at least $130,000.  Gifts may be made as a one-time donation or may be pledged out over 3-5 years.

 

It is important to note that once the endowment is created, the gift must be invested for at least one year before it can provide expendable funds.  Donors may wish to make a separate gift in the interim in order begin awarding the scholarship.

 

Annual Expendable Scholarships

Annual donations provide the basis for annual expendable scholarships.  Donors must commit to providing a minimum of $1,000 per year for a minimum of 5 years in order to create a named scholarship.   The maximum amount awarded for athletic scholarships is $4,500 per year.  Should a donor wish to provide funding in excess of $4,500 per year, several scholarships may be created and could be at various values.
